Context (4:00)
Basement Tapes song, recorded in 1967. On Great White Wonder bootleg. Performed at Isle of Wight in 1969. He’s played it 6 times over these years, mostly recently in London in 2003, which we discusss.
Versions & Covers (8:00)
We visit all Dylan’s versions, as well as Manfred Mann’s.
Music Time with Kelly (19:00)
30 minute lesson, courtesy of the great Dylan Chords.
Song Itself — Theories (22:30)
We talk about the song and theories about how it came to be. Dylan claims it’s just a nursery rhyme. There’s evidence it could be about multiple people: Gordon Quinn, Larry Quinlan, Denzel Washington (I kid!), but probably Anthony Quinn of The Savage Innocents.
At 35:00 we talk about the Inuit or Yupik connections.
And, of course, we make sure it’s not Jesus at 45:00.
Does it work in 2021? (47:50)
It’s charming, but is that enough?

Recommendations (57:30)
Kelly re-watched Hook. She watched the Netflix show, Great American BBQ Challenge, along with Community, Cougar Town, and Space Force. As for music: Queens of the Stone Age, Tool, and finished Sufjan’s discography post-Adz.
Daniel read Akiko Busch's How to Disappear: Notes on Invisibility in a Time of Transparency and Anna North's Outlawed. He started his reread of Bolaño’s catalog with The Skating Rink and Nazi Literature in the Americas.
Endings (1:09:30)
Kelly randomly chose 5 words: mention, thin, crisis, solid, and shadow.
