099 – "One More Night"

"dorky AF"

Sign on the Window isn't the Bob Dylan podcast you need, but it's definitely the one that you want! Each week we select a Dylan song at random, live with the song for a week (or two) and then get together to discuss. This week we revisit 1969's Nashville Skyline and "One More Night."

In this penultimate episode of Season 3, Kelly and Daniel talk about the dorkiness of the song, "nature" Bob versus "nurture" Bob, generic pop songs and children's TV shows (or, shows from our childhood, like Mr. Face and Stick Stickly, Blues Clues and Scruff McGruff).

Next episode: EPISODE 100!!!! Oh... I hate myself for loving you.

Context (2:45)

"One More Night" was recorded in 6 takes (take 6 on Nashville Skyline) on February 13, 1969 at Studio A in Nashville, Tennessee. Along with Bob, this track features Bob Wilson on piano, Charlie Daniels and Norman Blake on guitar, Charlie McCoy on bass, and Kenny Buttrey on drums.

Dylan has played this live only twice: June 6, 1990 and September 29, 1995.

Of course, as of recording, The Bootleg Series, Vol. 15: Travelin’ Thru, 1967–1969 features outtakes from this era of JWH and Nashville Skyline, including Take 2 of this song.

Song Itself (4:30)

Kelly is spot on calling this song "dorky AF." Knowing this allows one to move on and try to appreciate the song for whatever it is. Musically, the twanging guitars are subtly excellent and, despite wishing they would, never overshadow Dylan's performance.

Naturally, we have more natural imagery during this time period. Yet this one feels like he's on autopilot. Kelly and Daniel have fun making fun of our narrator standing out in the rain and how this song feels like the origins story of a supervillain. Other lines make Daniel think of better Bob Dylan songs he'd rather be listening to. That is all levels out into generic place is a knock for the song.

Does this song work today? (20:00)

Not particularly. In a season with some really great Dylan songs, this one is very mediocre. It's not a slog or tough to listen to. It's just lacking something you're too detached from to want to put your finger on it.

RECOMMENDATIONS (31:30)

Kelly has been delving into the Dumb Gay Politics extra episodes on the various Patreon tiers. She also went to the Night Flight Halloween show, as that's just around the corner.

Daniel attempted to catch up on two podcasts: Welcome to Night Vale and King Falls AM. But ended up listening to a lot of music: Chris Farren Born Hot, Tim Barry Roads to Richmond, Big Thief U.F.O.F. and Two Hands, Angel Olsen All Mirrors, Wilco Ode to Joy and Liza Anne Fine But Dying.

ENDINGS

Down to 110 410 songs.

Kelly guessed #68. Could've been "Narrow Way" from Tempest.

Randomly, it's #118. First Planet Waves since Episode 5, "Dirge."
